Ms Ice Sandwich by Mieko Kawakami – Book Review Yon Nyan / 22nd May Ms Ice Sandwich is an #OwnVoices Japanese novella that is part of the Pushkin Press Japanese Novellas line, which consists of novellas written by authors who have won the Akutagawa Literary Prize—which is one of Japan’s most sough-after prizes— at some point during.   “Ms Ice Sandwich” is a name I made up, of course. I thought of it the minute I first saw her. Ms Ice Sandwich’s eyelids are always painted with a thick layer of electric blue, exactly the same colour as those hard ice lollies that have been sitting in our .

The complete review's Review. The narrator of Ms Ice Sandwich is a boy in fourth grade, living with his mother and paternal grandmother; his father died when he was four years old. Grandma has been bedridden for the last two years, apparently after a stroke, and largely unable to talk or react, but the boy still likes to spend time with her.   The second book from Pushkin Press’s Japanese Novellas series which I am going to review today is Ms Ice Sandwich by Kawakami Mieko (yes, she shares the same last name as Kawakami Hiromi whose Record of a Night Too Brief I reviewed last week, but the two authors have no relation whatsoever as far as I am concerned), translated by Louise Heal Kawai.

She is beautiful to him, and he calls her “Ms Ice Sandwich”, and endlessly draws her portrait. Ms Ice Sandwich is one of the books that remind me why I love Japanese literature so much.

It is great to know that a Japanese author can make me believe in humanity amidst all the awful things that we have to endure nowadays. This book, which is not about anything, in particular, managed to make me happy only with its characters. Tender, warm, yet unsentimental, Ms Ice Sandwich is a story about new starts, parents who have departed, and the importance of saying goodbye.
